Marian Pop

The show must go on ... Freddie Mercury

As CYRANO by David DiChiera, lately performed at

The Florida Grand Opera

Cyrano: You "Nose" It's Good Opera

Thanks to Pop's capable facial expressions and gestures, Cyrano came through as strong and charismatic among men, but hopelessly awkward and painfully timid in love. (Spoiler alert!) In the final scene, when Pop stabs drunkenly through his fatal concussion at his shadowy lifelong enemies, all the while singing in his rich, commanding baritone voice, I seriously got goosebumps. I was overwhelmed by the thought of an entire life lived in debilitating fear, and concurrently bewitched by the performer's incredible voice and the gorgeous sounds of the orchestra.

As Figaro in "Il Barbiere di Seviglia" by G. Rossini
At The Arizona Opera in 2010

'Barber of Seville' has boffo Figaro

... Then Figaro entered the scene, with his "Largo al factotum," and it was as if someone plugged it into 220 volts. From that moment on, this became one of the best "Barbers" ever.

It wasn't just that Marian Pop as Figaro, the barber and schemer, energized every scene he was in, not only with a booming voice that carried over the orchestra, and not only that his comic antics were actually funny, but that everyone else seemed to kick it up a notch, too. The performance went from adequate to "Hey, Hazel, get a load of this!"

There were no weak links in the cast, although no one quite measured up to Pop.

As Figaro at the Leipziger Oper some revues

Marian Pop is seen in the title role as a comedian, an ever-present all-rounder, who rocks his lot with a brilliantly easy baritone, though his Figaro ia allowed no moment of rest - Leipzig Almanach
An excellent cast ... The marvelous bel canto tenor José Manuel Zapata, the hyperactive Figaro Marian Pop, the blustering Doctor Bartolo Donato di Stefano ... Gifted Rampensäue all three, silly, lively, doubletaking, dodging, hilarious. Even vocally, they leave no wishes unfulfilled ... Zapata is a lyric tenor with buffo talent, Pop a supple baritone - Leipziger Volkszeitung
The baritone Marian Pop (Figaro) knows how to shake up a stage in the truest sense of the words. He showed great playfulness and made a vocal impact from his entrace with the aria Largo al factotum -dispatched with high speed and enormous flexibility and a rousing high A - underlined by him by his firey phrasing in the duets - operapoint.com
